Physical Education

At Rivers Primary Academy, we are athletes!

We want our pupils to love physical education and sport. We inspire them to aspire to be personal trainers, nutritionists, sports journalists or gold medal winners. The PE curriculum has been carefully crafted so that our children develop their sporting capital. We want our children to remember their PE lessons in our school, be proud to represent their school, to cherish these memories, be proud of their achievements and embrace the opportunities they are presented with.

Intent:

Our curriculum develops pupils’ aspirations so that they strive to be the best that they can be. The PE curriculum promotes curiosity and a love and thirst for learning. We aim to enrich our pupils’ time in our school with memorable experiences. We carefully plan the subject knowledge, skills and vocabulary, coupled with specific Aspire character virtues and learning behaviours, so that our students have the tools to be successful in learning and in life. We aim to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all students, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation:

PE is taught for 2 hours each week covering two sporting disciplines every half term. We use Get Set for PE plans which provide clear progression, cross curricular links and the physical, social, emotional and thinking whole child objectives. In some year groups, lessons are taught by a PE specialist teacher or coaches from Walsall Football Club. Children are encouraged to participate in lunch time sports clubs and after school sport clubs. Children are strongly encouraged to participate in competitive sporting events. There are also many opportunities for children to attend, as a spectator, major sporting events.

Impact:

We aim for all of our children to leave Rivers Primary equipped with the PE skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at KS3 and for life as an adult in the wider world. We use formative assessment in every PE lesson. Cumulative quizzing using questions from the current theme content are created alongside questions aiming to retrieve knowledge and skills from previous learning. Reviews in PE include learning walks, pupil and staff voice. All of this information is gathered and reviewed. It is used to inform further curriculum developments and provision is adapted accordingly.
