At Rivers Primary Academy, we encourage our pupils to become independent, creative and fluent Mathematicians. Our aim is to foster a love of Maths within our pupils and to equip them with the tools and strategies necessary to use Maths with confidence. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving and the ability to think in abstract ways. We understand that Mathematics is integral to everyday life; with this in mind, we endeavour to develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards Mathematics that will stay with them throughout their school and future lives.
In order to accelerate our children’s learning post Covid- 19, our mathematics curriculum was redesigned using the DfE’s ‘Ready to Progress’ curriculum. Through formative and summative assessment teachers and leaders have ensured that this bespoke curriculum enables children to access their year group curriculum.
At Rivers, we teach a discrete arithmetic lesson each week. This lesson focuses on one particular aspect of arithmetic and allows teachers to delve deeply into the methods and processes of the operation being taught. Children then apply their understanding in a low stake quiz.
Through the use and promotion of Times Tables Rock Stars and daily written practise, our children will become fluent in their times tables by the end of autumn term in year 4.
Children are fluent mathematicians who are able to apply their mathematical knowledge and understanding to reason. End of year outcomes show that children are continuing to make accelerated progress and meet age related expectations.
